Last winter, Science Teacher Tammy Davis and I were asked to participate in the Digital Citizenship Course offered by San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE). The course is designed to help schools become Common Sense Digital Citizenship Certified. I accepted the role as Implementation Project Lead for my campus, San Pasqual Academy.
During the course, I adapted a Common Sense Media lesson to Google Apps for Education (GAFE) and shared it with my colleagues so we could teach a practice lesson. We successfully taught the lesson Turn Down the Dial on Cyberbullying and Online Cruelty during two advisory periods. You may view the original lessons from Common Sense and you may view the student documents I created: Turn Down the Dial on Cyberbullying and Online Cruelty
Even though our campus embraced digital citizenship, I had to delay the implementation. After creating documents for the pilot lesson, I realized that creating the actual implementation plan would take longer than the time provided during my six-week SDCOE course. Converting Common Sense Media’s lessons to Google Doc multi-media tech sets proved to be an effective student and teacher resource during our sample lesson, but the conversion process was time consuming. Tamara Davis was able to complete the course to earn Digital Citizenship Teacher Certification within the allotted time. However, I decided to push the full creation of the large implementation plan to the summer, so I would have time to work develop quality materials and meet with my principal to create a pacing guide. Summer is here and I finally had time to return to working on the project. Last night, I drafted an implementation plan and shared it with my principal, Yvette Davis. We are both excited to integrate the lessons into the advisory curriculum and to support the adults on our campus through teen panels and adult conversation cases. A copy of the first draft of the implementation plan is available below.
