Two weeks ago, we finished writing our first round of letters for the month of January. We followed these directions and rubric.
When we wrote the letters in class on Thursday, January, 26th, students were given support in the form of sentence frames in the Google Docs template, a word bank posted on the whiteboard, and direct adult support. In periods 4 and 6, one adult was assigned to each group to tutor students as needed. We wrote letters four times during last semester, so many students chose to work independently. Unfortunately, many students who worked independently were unable to complete their letters. These students can still submit their letters in Google Classroom. Since many students needed extra time (partially due to the shortened week from the rain day), I waited until this weekend to finish grading missing and resubmitted assignments. Here is a summary:
Most of the students who completed the letters earned a 2.5 or a C, which means they were almost able to independently complete the learning goals:
This week, we will print and sign the letters to send home.

Today, we held our second classroom meetings. After we reviewed the minutes from our last meeting, we identified our current successes and made a plan to ensure that one of them continues. Our agreements and minutes are below.
We’ve now completed two weeks of the semester, and I just entered the first assignment into Infinite Campus. Following our classroom calendar, I entered grades for the initial round of community circle. The assignment is called Community Circle #1 in the gradebook.
Students, as you know, I assess your speaking skills during community circles and meetings using a Google Form. Today, I moved the data from that form to a spreadsheet and used it to calculate your average score. Following the rubric, this score became your grade. If you are unhappy with your grade and/or just want to improve it during the next two weeks, please check the directions and rubric here.
I also created the chart above to help us understand trends. I am proud to see that the majority of students earned a 2.5 or C, which means that they are almost reaching the learning goals. Remember the learning goals for this assignment are:
The next assignment that will go in the gradebook is Letter #1, so make sure you try your hardest as we write them this week. We will finish the letters on Thursday. On Friday, we will complete a Step Up to Writing assignment, which is titled Summary Paragraph #1. To earn a grade for this, you will need to complete a vocabulary card based on a word from the article, just like we did last week. Keep up the good work!
Today, we held our first classroom meeting. In each meeting, we selected a new class mascot to use as a talking piece, identified a class problem, and held a discussion to find a solution. Summaries of the meetings are below.
